INFORMATIONHosted by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Wimbledon has developed from the garden party atmosphere of its first match in 1877 to the highly professional tournament it is today. Drawing only a couple of hundred people originally, the world-renowned event now attracts almost half a million people annually, and through the media has drawn a following of millions throughout the globe.During the original tournament in 1877, the only event held was the Gentlemen's Singles, which was won by a Harrovian rackets player by the name of Spencer Gore. The Ladies' Singles emerged in 1884 and out of an entry of 13 competitors a woman named Maud Watson arose as the champion. Over the many years since then, Wimbledon has grown to extraordinary heights due to many factors, including rising popularity, the introduction of television and radio, the expansion of air travel in the 1950's, and in recent years the breaking of some long standing records. In 1993, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, in an effort to maintain its leadership as the premiere tennis tournament in the world, unveiled a Long Term Plan to improve the overall experience of the event for the fans and players. Stage One consisted of building a new No.1 Court, a Broadcast Centre and two new grass courts. Stage Two involved removing the old No.1 Court for the new Millennium Building, expanding the West Stand of Centre Court and supplying extensive facilities for all those involved with the tournament. Stage Three continues today as plans have been made to erect a retractable roof, as well as construct a new Champions building and increase the seating capacity from 13,800 to 15,000. With all the new features and amenities, right now is the best time to experience Wimbledon for yourself!
