With the Northeast Division all but wrapped up and their struggles on the road a distant memory, the Buffalo Sabres like where they are less than a month before the NHL playoffs begin. "If we play like the last three games, it's going to be tough to beat us," Buffalo defenseman Toni Lydman said.

The Hurricanes are becoming harder to figure out this month, and that's saying something for a team that was a mystery for the opening months of the season.
Now they seem to be catching some teams by surprise, and it's the younger players making a large chunk of the contributions. They've been mostly unfazed in winning consecutive games against Washington and Pittsburgh.
So while the schedule seemed cruel in one regard, it might turn out to be convenient for the Hurricanes as they try to carry that momentum into Sunday's home game against Buffalo.
The Hurricanes can be credited with making some decisions that have worked out. They have called up players regularly from Albany of the AHL, and usually those players have made significant contributions.

Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Manny Legace was lifted in the second period Saturday with an unspecified lower body injury, shortly after being leveled during a scramble in front of the net. Ray Whitney has found himself a leader of a very young Carolina Hurricanes team as the regular season winds down. On Thursday night, he showed the youngsters how to get it done against the best team in the NHL. Whitney ripped the puck through the left armpit of rookie goalie Semyon Varlamov at 4:02 of overtime, giving the Hurricanes a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals.
