(Sat, 20 Mar 2010 17:29:31 PDT)
Alex Ovechkin has returned from a two-game NHL suspension in style, scoring in the first period for the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin netted his 45th goal of the season on Saturday night to give the Capitals a 2-1 lead 10:47 into the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Capitals Team Report
(Sat, 20 Mar 2010 03:25:32 PDT)
Championship teams in any sport rely heavily on defense. As the Caps push hard for a Stanley Cup this season, there's still a big question if they can play defense well enough to be a championship team.
Two defensive breakdowns hurt the Caps on Thursday, a big reason the Hurricanes edged the Caps, 4-3, in overtime.
The Caps gave up a breakaway goal in the final two minutes of regulation to give the Hurricanes a brief 3-2 lead, and they had another breakdown in overtime that proved costly.
Nobody picked up Ray Whitney between the circles when the Hurricanes had the puck late in overtime, and he walked in untouched to score the winning goal.
The Caps play good defense for long stretches.
