Bengals: MRI shows Palmer won't need surgery

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer won't need surgery on his right elbow and should be ready for the team's regular offseason workouts. Team spokesman Jack Brennan said Tuesday night the latest MRI on Palmer's elbow indicates the quarterback won't need an operation to repair a ligament and tendon partially torn from the bone.

Don't hold your collective breath, Bengals fans. Finally, you thought after the 0-8 midseason, the Bengals will hire a general manager. They'll add scouts. They'll do something—anything—to change the way they do business.

Nope. Don't count on it after a 4-3-1 second half. Management will be content to write off the 2008 season, one of the most disappointing for a franchise accustomed to disappointing its customers, because of the loss of a franchise-record 23 players to injured reserve and the absence of quarterback Carson Palmer for 12 of the 16 games because of an inflamed throwing elbow.

Nope, Bengals management will move forward with the confidence to stay the course into next season.

Receiver Chad Ocho Cinco was inactive for the Cincinnati Bengals' final game Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs because of a hamstring injury. The Bengals also were missing receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who had a bad back. The Bengals' offense was missing six starters from their opening game roster.

Coy Bacon, a fierce pass rusher during a 14-year NFL career with Los Angeles, Cincinnati and Washington, died Monday. He was 66. His died in his hometown of Ironton in southern Ohio, the Cincinnati Bengals said. The cause was not disclosed. Bacon played for the Los Angeles Rams from 1968-72, when he made the first of his three Pro Bowls.

Ohio's two NFL teams are in a crumbling state of disrepair. They're in such bad shape, in fact, some of their fans wish they'd relocate.
