The Rockets were on a good roll through much of December. They blew out the Nets on the road, their most lopsided win of the season, to move to 19-9. The offense was clicking. They had not lost consecutive games since the fourth and fifth games of the season, and even then, it took Portland Trail Blazer Brandon Roy's last-second, 31-footer to do it.
They have lost six of eight games, with a season-high three-game losing streak and season-high five-game road losing streak.
If they are unsure why things changed, there can be no doubt about how.
The defense has fallen apart, with teams making 49.5 percent of their shots in those eight games.

Houston Rockets forward Ron Artest missed his second straight game with a sore right ankle, sitting out Tuesday night against the Philadelphia 76ers. Artest is averaging 16 points and 5.5 rebounds for the Rockets. He stretched his ankle on the court about an hour before tip, but was not healthy enough to play.

Tracy McGrady missed Houston's game against Atlanta on Saturday night because of a chronically sore left knee, and sixth-man Ron Artest was sidelined by a swollen right ankle. Brent Barry started his first game of the season, replacing McGrady. According to coach Rick Adelman, Houston might give McGrady more time to recover by resting him on the second game of back-to-back nights.

The analysis was made by The Salt Lake Tribune, which studied tax records filed by NBA player charities. New Orleans was without swingman Peja Stojakovic and reserve center Hilton Armstrong. Stojakovic remained sideline by back soreness for a fifth-straight game.
