NASCAR INFORMATION

The History of NASCAR

Over the years we have seen NASCAR become much more that just a "redneck" sport as it was branded early on. NASCAR is truly a sport that is enjoyed today by many individuals nationwide. The actual concept of NASCAR began with what were called "bootleggers" smuggling whiskey at rapid speeds during the night. One might say that NASCAR really got its start back in 1938 when the first race was scheduled on sandy Daytona Beach. The winner of that race took home a bottle of rum, a box of cigars and a case of motor oil. It was then that Bill France realized there needed to be an official organization to keep records and recognize champions. NASCAR - The National Association of Stock Car Racing would be it.

Glenn Dunaway was the winner of what would be the first official NASCAR race held in Charlotte, NC at the fairgrounds in 1949. A year later came the first "superspeedway" as we know it today in Darlington, SC. This track was larger and wider than any driver had ever raced on before. However, Darlington today is actually one of the smaller tracks on the circuit. NASCAR really struck it big that same year at the 2.5-mile track in Daytona, where the first Daytona 500 was held ending in a photo finish. NASCAR fans could see the whole track from any seat in the grandstand.

Throughout the 1960's NASCAR had many ups and downs with the car manufacturers dropping in and out of racing. This was mostly due to various safety issues. The 70's would bring good times with the ban of cigarette advertisements on radio and television. R.J. Reynolds talked Bill France into letting the Cigarette Company put their advertising dollars into NASCAR. This is how the Winston Cup Series evolved. Also, the ABC television network began to televise small portions of the races. In 1979 the Daytona 500 would once again get the sparks flying as the first NASCAR race to be fully televised by CBS. Richard Petty, a NASCAR hero won this race as an estimated 20 million viewers watched from home. Continued success in the 90's can be attributed to more and more corporate sponsors joining NASCAR.
