Ryder Cup Information:
The Ryder Cup is one of last of the great sporting events founded on esteem rather than prize money. Originally intended to be the ultimate match between the best of American and British players and eventually spanning 34 competitions over 78 years, the Ryder Cup was first officially played in 1927, even though there were a number of unofficial matches played in the years before. The Cup's namesake was a man by the name of Samuel Ryder, a local seed merchant and entrepreneur who, in his 50's, took up the game of golf and enlisted British legend Abe Mitchell to be his personal golf tutor. A member of the appreciative gallery at one of the unofficial matches, Ryder was invited to have tea afterwards by Mitchell and fellow Englishman George Duncan. Americans Walter Hagen and Emmett French were also there, and Duncan suggested that Ryder establish matches on a regular basis and also provide the trophy. Ryder immediately agreed, and the gold chalice bearing his name and the likeness of Mitchell was made. The first Ryder Cup was won by the Americans, 9.5 - 2.5.

Since then, the Ryder Cup has gone through a few changes. In 1973, the PGA of Great Britain decided to change its selection process using a year-long points system to select eight of its players and the other four by invitation. Then in 1977, Jack Nicklaus suggested to the PGA of Great Britain that the competitiveness of the Cup be improved. Heeding his advice, it was decided that residents of any European country could compete. Considering the United States had won every title from 1959 to 1977, with the exception of a tie in 1969, this greatly upgraded the competitive level of the game. There were also some format changes - the most recent being the revision to provide four four-ball and four foursome matches to the first two days and 12 singles matches on the third day, bringing the total points awarded to 28. Then after the attacks on September 11th, 2001, the Ryder Cup was cancelled that year, and it was decided that all future matches would be played during even-numbered years.

In 2006, the Ryder Cup will be played at The K Club, Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland. Set on the River Liffey, this elegant resort and championship golf was built in 1991.
